The Environment and You

The Environment and You

All organisms depend on their environments for energy and materials needed to sustain life: clean air, potable water, nutritious food, and safe places to live. For most of human history, increases in longevity were due to improved access to these necessities.  Advances in agriculture, sanitation, water treatment, and hygiene have had a great impact on human health but adversely affected the environment.

Rising temperatures are fueling environmental degradation, natural disasters, weather extremes, food and water insecurity, economic disruption, conflict, and terrorism. Sea levels are rising, the Arctic is melting, coral reefs are dying, oceans are acidifying, and forests are burning. It is clear that business as usual is not good enough. As the infinite cost of climate change reaches irreversible highs, now is the time for bold collective action.

As the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres pointed out , “the climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win”.
