Stomach ulcers are open sores that form on the inside lining of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine, and the most common symptom is stomach pain. Stress and lifestyle choices (such as eating spicy food) are thought to be major causes of stomach ulcers. However, it has been discovered that bacterial infections and the use of certain medications (rather than stress or diet) are the primary causes of most gastric and duodenal ulcers.
